Tyres are not one-size-fits-all, and neither is tyre pressure

One size fits all

Some things are one-size-fits-all. Certain clothes, for instance. Snapback baseball caps. Wristwatches. And that can be very convenient! No need to go around hunting for the thing that fits your specific purpose, and no need for manufacturers to make a whole lot of different variants!

But many more things aren’t one-size-fits-all. Most clothes (even some that claim to be able to fit anyone). Bags (a handbag and a suitcase have very different purposes). And, like it or not, tyres – and tyre pressure.

A tyre pressure monitoring system helps you keep your tyres at the right pressure for you

Different tyres are good for different situations. What might be useful on slick, icy or slippery surfaces may not fare too well on sand, or mud. If you spend most of your time in the city, then your tyres might not be suitable for driving off-road. But if you cruise down high street in monster truck wheels, you just look like a jerk.

Along the same lines, the same tyre pressure won’t suit everyone. For one thing, vehicles of different sizes and weights should have their tyres at different pressures. Another factor is that if you’re doing a lot of off-road driving, you might want tyre pressure that’s different from if you’re doing city driving. Finally, changing temperatures will affect your tyre pressure – if it’s about to heat up or cool down a lot, you might want to take that into account with your tyre pressure.

Now, most people hardly ever think about their tyre pressure, which is perfectly understandable. It isn’t really the sort of interesting thing you want to dwell on. Plus, since one size doesn’t fit all, you need to change your marker for “okay pressure” each time you change vehicles (and sometimes if you change cargo). But it is important – incorrectly inflated tyres have a bunch of harmful consequences, ranging from poorer fuel efficiency to increased risk of blowouts.

The solution? Get technology to think about your tyre pressure for you. Automated tyre sensors can measure the pressure levels of your tyres and alert you when you need to take action. With a tyre pressure monitor, you can adjust the desired pressure levels, so the system will only trouble you when it really matters for you.
